Disk-type suspended ceramic insulators (common type) for high voltage overhead transmission and distribution lines are used for insulation and fixed conductors. Insulators are usually assembled into strings for different voltage levels of lines.
Insulators play two basic roles in overhead transmission lines, i.e. supporting conductors and preventing current return to earth. These two roles must be guaranteed. Insulators should not fail due to various mechanical and electrical stresses caused by changes in environmental and electrical load conditions. Otherwise, insulators will not play a significant role and will damage the service life of the whole line.
Common and pollution-resistant insulators of the same strength grade can be exchanged by using the same spherical socket connection size.
