The US plans to ban the use of Chinese technology or equipment in submarine cables.
July 17, 2025 The Financial Times reported that the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is preparing to introduce a new measure that would prohibit any submarine communication cables containing Chinese technology or equipment from accessing the US.
At the same time, the FCC will also propose a measure to simplify the process for US companies to apply for submarine cable licenses, as long as they provide specific security guarantees.
Once the new regulations are implemented, Chinese enterprises will be unable to obtain FCC licenses to build or operate cables connecting the US, and will also be prohibited from leasing capacity on cables laid by other companies.
